Abstract: Vittorio Peri (1932–2006) has contributed significantly to studies on the Cyrillo-Methodian question, although his publications have received little echo in Slavistics, since they are written in Italian and are devoted to complex ecclesiological and canonical issues that are often difficult for philologists and linguists to understand. The article dwells especially on his study Il mandato missionario e canonico di Metodio e l’ingresso della lingua slava nella liturgia (The Missionary and Canonical Mandate of Methodius and the Entry of the Slavonic Language into the Liturgy, Peri 1988), which focuses on the question of Methodius’ ordination in sacris, illustrating his work especially in relation to the liturgical use of Slavonic language and in the broader context of the missiones ad gentes promoted by the Holy See.
