Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Space, Political Commodity: Crime, Business, and Power in the Periphery of São Paulo This article aims to understand the socio-spatial dimensions that make up the disputes over market and power embedded in everyday life in the periphery of the metropolis of São Paulo. The quebrada (slum) in question is a place of contested norms and shared hegemony, and it explicitly demonstrates the production of space as a political commodity. The territory is a concrete expression of diverse regimes of urban order management mediated by a constellation of illegalities. The hypothesis is that the social production of space takes on the contours of private management of the territory mobilized by updated strategies of of land and real estate commodification within urban peripheries.
