Impact of COVID-19 vaccination in Brazilian cities of different sizes

Year: 2025
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: This study aimed to assess the impact of COVID-19 vaccination on mortality and hospitalization rates in small, medium, and large municipalities in the Southeast region of Brazil. To this end, a comparative epidemiological analysis was conducted between the pre- and post-vaccination periods, using official data extracted from public health surveillance platforms. The comparison between the periods revealed that, despite an increase in the number of confirmed cases at certain points in time, a significant reduction in the number of hospitalizations and deaths related to the disease was observed after the start of immunization campaigns. These results highlight the essential role of vaccination as a tool for controlling the pandemic, promoting greater protection for the population and reducing the impact on the healthcare system. Vaccination effectiveness was consistent across all municipalities analyzed, regardless of population size, reinforcing the importance of large-scale public immunization policies.
