Eggs in the diet of women during the climacteric period. Role in maintaining health

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Introduction: The climacteric period is characterised by profound hormonal changes that affect body composition, metabolism, bone and muscle health, mood, and cognitive function. These changes can increase the risk of chronic diseases and functional impairment, which can negatively impact quality of life. In this context, diet plays a key role as a preventive and therapeutic strategy. Due to their high nutritional density, eggs are an important food at this stage. Their high-quality protein content, together with essential nutrients such as choline and vitamins D and E, as well as antioxidants such as lutein and zeaxanthin, help to maintain muscle and bone mass, control body weight, and stabilise mood and cognitive function. Current scientific evidence indicates that moderate egg consumption as part of a balanced diet does not increase cardiovascular risk. This paper reviews the main physiological changes associated with the climacteric period and analyses the potential role of eggs in a healthy diet. It highlights how eggs can help prevent nutritional deficiencies and promote the overall well-being of women at this stage in their lives.
