Abstract: Between 1870 and 1890, between the publication of El gaucho Martín Fierro (1872) and the arrival of Rubén Darío in Buenos Aires (1893), literature and advertising maintained unique relationships. Modern advertising had just emerged in the 1860s, while the project of a national literature, between newspapers and books, was beginning to be fulfilled. The article examines five episodes of literary history (A Visit to the Ranquel Indians by Lucio V. Mansilla, The Gaucho Martín Fierro by José Hernández, Juan Moreira by Eduardo Gutiérrez, a short novel by Juana Manuela Gorriti and a successful literary and artistic almanac of the end of the century) that were also episodes in the history of advertising.
