Effect of Helicopter Parenting and Filial Maturity on Associational and Affectual Solidarity Among Chinese College Students Living in Korea

Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: This study examines how paternal and maternal helicopter parenting and filial maturity toward fathers and mothers-perceived by Chinese college students in Korea-affect intergenerational solidarity with each parent, focusing on associational and affectual dimensions.A survey was conducted with 248 Chinese students enrolled in four-year universities in Korea.Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, one-way analysis of variance, and Pearson's correlation analysis with SPSS 27.0, and path model analysis with Stata 17.0.The major findings are as follows.Paternal helicopter parenting had a positive direct effect on affectual solidarity with paternal figures and a positive indirect effect mediated by filial maturity, indicating partial mediation.Similarly, maternal helicopter parenting showed a positive direct effect on affectual solidarity with maternal figures, though no significant mediating effect was found through filial maturity. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the association of helicopter parenting with intergenerational solidarity, emphasizing the key role of filial maturity. However, associational solidarity was not significantly influenced either helicopter parenting or filial maturity. The study highlights that helicopter parenting, rather than being solely negative, can enhance parentchild relationships. The discussion explores how paternal and maternal helicopter parenting differentially influence affectual solidarity, underscoring the significant role of filial maturity.Recommendations for Chinese students' adjustment in Korea and directions for future research are also discussed.
