High-Sensitivity Magnetic Field Detection Using Whispering Gallery Modes in a Bent Optical Fiber Loop
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: In this study, we present a simple, robust, and highly sensitive magnetic field sensor based on the resonant excitation of whispering gallery modes (WGMs) in a coated single-mode fiber (SMF) loop. This loop is formed by bending a standard coated SMF around magnetostrictive nickel pillars. The deformation induced in the nickel pillar, with a radius of 10 mm, under a magnetic field causes a corresponding shift in the WGMs' resonant wavelength. This setup achieves a high sensitivity of 249.43 pm/mT within the magnetic field range of 0-15 mT.
