SLA-6, -7 and -8 as Potential Xenoantigens: A Structural Study
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Purpose: The Swine Leukocyte Antigen (SLA) system, on chromosome 7 of the pig genome is a key component of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) and plays a critical role in immune recognition. While classical SLA I have been well characterized, non-classical SLA-I molecules (SLA-6, -7, and -8) remain poorly understood. As transmembrane proteins, these non-classical SLA-I molecules may serve as xenoantigens in xenotransplantation, potentially contributing to xenorecognition and rejection. This study provides the first structural modeling analysis of SLA-6, -7, and -8, offering insights into their potential role as targets for xenoimmune responses, also comparing to the HLAs counterparts.
