Off-Target Effects of Mycophenolic Acid on BK Polyomavirus Replication in Human Primary Renal Proximal Tubular Epithelial Cells
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Purpose: In the current immunosuppression era of tacrolimus (TAC)/mycophenolate (MPA), uncontrolled BK polyomavirus (BKPyV)-replication causes premature kidney allograft failure. Since antivirals are lacking, screening for new-onset BKPyV-DNAemia and reducing immunosuppression remain as key management recommendations (Kotton et al. 2024, Transplantation 108:1834). Since TAC contributes to directly promote BKPyV-replication in renal proximal tubule epithelial cells (RPTECs), we investigated the off-target effects of MPA on BKPyV in RPTECs.
