Intracellular Membrane Attack Complexes Disrupt Proteostasis and Acquire Alarmin-Like Properties during Antibody-Mediated Rejection

Abstract: Purpose: The pro-inflammatory effects of membrane attack complexes (MACs) are widely attributed to their abilities to cause cell death. Based on the large, de novo protein burden imposed by MACs on target cells and the intrinsic propensity of its components to oligomerize, we tested an alternate hypothesis that MACs may form non-cytolytic protein aggregates causing endothelial cell (EC) activation.
