Unraveling the uncertainty of cerebral aneurysms: challenges in diagnosis, rupture risk prediction, and emerging solutions

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Cerebral aneurysms occur when a weakened blood vessel in the brain bulges, potentially leading to life-threatening rupture and bleeding. While most aneurysms are asymptomatic, their sudden rupture poses a significant clinical problem. This review examines the unpredictable nature of cerebral aneurysms and the challenge of diagnosis for this condition. Despite numerous studies on aneurysms, there is uncertainty about why an aneurysm causes bleeding, what increases its chances for rupture, and the probability of rupture in any given timeframe. To examine upcoming treatments and discoveries, this review studies the variability and lack of knowledge in the pathogenesis of cerebral aneurysms, causing a challenging diagnosis, and how recent research has provided insight into learning more about this condition. The review also proposes a scored diagnostic flowchart that can be implemented in a primary care physician’s annual visit, so that referral can be obtained for a definitive pre-rupture diagnosis when necessary. Given the uncertainty about the treatment of cerebral aneurysms, more research must be performed in order to accurately predict the time and the probability of rupture, along with potential solutions.
