Abstract: Pablo Neruda first conceived his Canto general as an epic of Chile and then of America. This continental scope later turned into an internationalist one as Neruda committed to communist struggles. The article examines how these different scales overlap in Neruda's work and how the reception of Canto general evolved, putting more or less emphasis on certain aspects and selecting different parts of the poem as emblematic of the whole.
