Abstract: This study examines the impact mechanisms of shadow banking on financing for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). By synthesizing domestic and international research findings, it systematically clarifies the definitions, characteristics, and developmental trajectories of shadow banking and SMEs. The analysis focuses on the root causes of financing constraints for Chinese SMEs and the limitations of shadow banking as an alternative funding channel. From an operational mechanism perspective, the study identifies differential impacts of bank-affiliated and non-bank shadow banking entities on SME financing. Empirical analysis using a Vector Autoregression (VAR) model reveals that while shadow banking temporarily alleviates financing constraints during specific periods, it concurrently introduces systemic risks. The paper concludes with policy recommendations for optimizing regulatory frameworks and enhancing financial infrastructure, offering theoretical insights to address the persistent financing challenges faced by SMEs.
