Missing Thoughts: Teaching Women Philosophers in Secondary Schools (Book Announcement)

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Various initiatives are currently pursuing the goal of diversifying philosophy teaching at universities and secondary schools (e.g., APA 2025, Hagengruber & Rohbeck 2015 or Fokt/Torregrossa n.d.).The predominantly male, western and white canon has long dominated the curricula in many countries. However, it is no longer considered adequate by many students and teachers alike, given the diversity of philosophy and philosophers, past and present. In response to the fact that the number of female philosophers found in curricula and textbooks for philosophy classes at German secondary schools is still extremely low, we launched our own project to support teachers to include female philosophers: A collection of excerpts from philosophical works written by women between 1405 and 2022, made accessible to advanced secondary school students and accompanied by introductions addressed to teachers. The book is scheduled for publication by Reclam in autumn 2025 under the title Mit Philosophinnen denken.Texte und Materialien für den Unterricht (Thinking with Female Philosophers.Texts and Teaching Materials). We are happy to introduce this forthcoming publication here.In the following, we briefly set out the relevance of the project, explain the book's content and highlight some of the reasoning and challenges from the selection process.A translated chapter on Frances Power Cobbe's deontological ethics is provided as an example at the end of this article. We hope that the presentation of our project will not only help to promote the selected philosophers' work and to bring them into the classroom but may also inspire similar projects in other languages and for different countries, tailored to the requirements of the respective education systems.
