Synergizing Heritage Weaves: A Technical and Aesthetic Study of Banarasi Brocade and Kota Doria Integration

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: India's rich textile legacy presents a singular potential for innovation through regional collaboration at a time when global fashion is quickly moving toward sustainability, ethical manufacturing, and cultural authenticity. As a case study of regional textile synergy with global design potential, this article examines the blending of two classic Indian handloom traditions: Kota Doria from Rajasthan and Banarasi Brocade from Uttar Pradesh. Kota Doria is prized for its light, airy texture and geometric khat patterns, whereas Banarasi Brocade is known for its luxurious silk and elaborate zari work. The combination of these many materials creates a strategic and creative partnership that appeals to the changing aesthetics of international fashion while showcasing the variety of Indian handicraft. The study looks at the advantages of this synthesis, such as its greater export potential, improved narrative value, aesthetic variety, and ability to sustain artisan communities through cross-regional involvement. Additionally, it highlights important obstacles such design harmonization, cultural sensitivity, technological incompatibility, and problems with scalability and commercial viability. The study illustrates how this fusion functions as a paradigm for regional cooperation and economic empowerment in addition to being a design innovation through field interviews with master weavers, case studies of modern Indian designers, and an examination of market patterns. In the end, the combination of Kota Doria and Banarasi Brocade is a good example of how old crafts can be updated to meet contemporary demands without sacrificing cultural authenticity. It promotes partnerships driven by design that have the potential to revive traditional textiles and establish India as a worldwide leader in sustainable fashion.
