Erratum: “Evidence for YORP-induced Spin Deceleration in Asteroid (433) Eros” (2025, ApJ, 986, 172)

Year: 2025
Type: erratum
Abstract: In our published article, we stated that "12 asteroids confirmed to exhibit the YORP effect all show spinning-up behavior" and asteroid (433) Eros is a "potential candidate for the first spinning-down asteroid" observed through the YORP effect. We would like to clarify that this statement inadvertently overlooked prior and more definitive evidence reported by J. Rodríguez Rodríguez et al. (2024), who identified asteroid (154244) 2002 KL6 as the first asteroid observed to be spinning down due to the YORP effect, based on consistent negative values of spin acceleration across their model fits.As a result, Table 1 should be updated to include this object.Furthermore, the observed spin deceleration of 2002 KL6, with an obliquity of 176°, contradicts our preliminary hypothesis that spinning-down asteroids might be exclusively correlated with obliquities near 90°.This highlights the need for a more comprehensive statistical analysis with additional YORP detections to confirm or refute any potential correlations. We thank J. Rodríguez Rodríguez et al. (2024) for their important contribution and apologize for the oversight. We confirm that the core results, analysis, and conclusions of our published article, apart from the specific points addressed in this erratum, remain unchanged.
