Abstract: Elevator noise is one of noise pollution that affect the living quality of residents. Because of the lack of accurate measurement methods and evaluation indexes for the indoor noise caused by elevator operation, the contradiction between residents complains over the elevator noise pollution and qualified inspection of the elevator from standards cannot be solved. In this study, one typical apartment building under the condition of common wall of elevator shaft and residence in a city in China is chosen as the research subject. The indoor noise caused by elevator operation was measured by the three‐dimensional grid distribution in space without interference from other obvious sound sources in the room. On the basis of the actual measurement data, the evolution of indoor noise during elevator operation was compared and analyzed, including the distribution characteristics of indoor elevator noise in the spatial horizontal and vertical directions, and the spatial attenuation of sound pressure level (SPL) in each octave and 1/3 octave. It is found from the experiments that the frequency range from 50 to 630 Hz were the most relevant frequency bands affecting residents’ complaints and that the largest values of the noise measurement at low and medium frequency bands were in the vertical plane near the inside wall. The research results can provide technical support for indoor elevator noise detection, evaluation, and control.
