Decarbonization measures selection tool towards Net Zero Emission: a case-study in the automotive industry

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Among the objectives that have been set to reduce global warming by 2050, the Net Zero Emission scenario is one of the most important. As a consequence, manufacturing firms’ scope 1&2 carbon emissions reduction has become a priority. To reach this goal, industrial companies are working on their production plant decarbonization by relying on strategies implying the implementation of various projects that participate in the reduction of factories scope 1&2 emissions. These projects are called Decarbonization Measures. Such measures are deeply studied beforehand in order to assess their potential impacts and feasibility on technical, financial and environmental terms. The evaluation of the combination of these measures through time and through constraint programming is essential to provide strategical guidelines for the plants to follow, ensuring its viability and effectiveness. These studies are carried out by energy managers in every production plant, resulting from the association of their plant understanding, mainly data-based, with the suggestions and requirements of both internal corporate management and external technology suppliers. The evaluation of cross-site Decarbonization Measure transferability through implementation scenarios represents a great way to accelerate the ongoing plant decarbonization process. This article presents an industrial case on which has been applied a method to evaluate the impacts of decarbonization measures implemented in other plants of the same multi-site company through scenarios analysis on a specific factory.
