Adherence to current classification of periodontitis from pre and postgraduate professors at dentistry schools in Colombia

Abstract: Introduction: Advances in understanding the multifactorial risks of periodontitis, including environmental exposures and genetic predispositions, have refined diagnostic frameworks. The 2018 global workshop introduced an updated classification, now widely adopted. This study aimed to assess knowledge, acceptance, and implementation of this classification among faculty at Colombian dental schools. Methods: A structured survey was distributed to professors affiliated with the Colombian Association of Dental Faculties. Statistical analyses evaluated respondents' familiarity with, acceptance of, and adherence to the current classification. Results: The sample included 188 faculty members (aged 27–74), from generalists to specialists. Overall, 52.65 % incorporate the classification into teaching, with periodontists as primary users. General dentists and orthodontists reported the least use. Among those familiar with the classification, 82.98 % apply it in external clinical practice, compared to only 17.02 % among those unfamiliar. Educators aware of the classification described it as clear, practical, and superior to the 1999 version, highlighting its expanded scope, improved disease severity criteria, and improved delineation of disease severity. However, some ambiguities were noted by those included in the sample. Conclusion: This is the first study to evaluate awareness and perception of the current periodontitis classification among Colombian dental faculty. Findings reveal limited awareness and highlight the need to better integrate periodontal diagnosis into academic and clinical training. Educators familiar with the classification find it more relevant and applicable, though further clarification and broader dissemination are needed. Future research should explore faculty perspectives across a more homogeneous sample to guide curricular development.
