Household water treatment and storage practices in Mogadishu's IDP camps: a cross-sectional study

Abstract: ABSTRACT Access to safe drinking water is a fundamental human right, yet internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Somalia face significant challenges, particularly in Mogadishu's Kahda district. This study examines household water treatment and storage (HWTS) practices among IDP residents, identifies sociodemographic factors influencing HWTS adoption, and assesses the relationship between these practices and waterborne disease incidence. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 384 households using a structured questionnaire administered via Kobo Toolbox. Data analysis involved descriptive and inferential statistics using Microsoft Excel. Findings revealed that 63.5% of respondents were unaware of HWTS methods, and only 36.2% practiced any form of water treatment. The primary water source was unprotected wells (77.9%), with 80.2% reporting challenges in water access. Chi-square tests demonstrated significant associations between sociodemographic factors (age, gender, and literacy) and HWTS knowledge and adoption (p < 0.05). The study highlights critical gaps in HWTS knowledge and practice among IDPs in Mogadishu. Effective HWTS is essential for reducing waterborne diseases. Urgent implementation of subsidized water treatment programs and community-based education interventions is essential for improving health outcomes in IDP camps.
