Mmap-02 Evaluation of the Brain Metastasis Clinic Patient Experience in a Multidisciplinary Setting

Year: 2025
Type: conference-abstract
Abstract: Most institutions utilize Press Ganey surveys to evaluate patient experiences in single-provider settings, but these surveys do not capture experiences in multidisciplinary care models. Given the advancements in precision medicine, innovative surgical techniques, and multiple radiation modalities, oncology care for brain metastases increasingly relies on coordinated care from medical oncology, radiation oncology, neurosurgery, neuroradiology, advanced practice providers (APPs), nursing, and research staff. In the Brain Metastasis Clinic (BMC), patients receive comprehensive, coordinated care, including clinical assessments, review of medical records and imaging, symptom management, clinical trial identification, and individualized treatment planning. A unique feature is that patients are seen in a single visit by a neurosurgeon, CNS radiation oncologist, and medical oncologist, with prior case review by a neuroradiologist. This reduces the need for multiple appointments and alleviates patient burden. From the initial patient referral to disposition of treatment, the BMC APPs play a key role in high-touch clinical navigation, personalized communication, and coordination with patients and providers. The BMC also offers clinical trial options for patients who are traditionally excluded. However, traditional patient satisfaction surveys, such as Press Ganey, do not capture the patient experience in this collaborative care model. This gap limits our understanding of how multidisciplinary approaches affect patient satisfaction, emotional well-being, retention, and clinical outcomes. Project Goals: 1.) Evaluate Patient Satisfaction: Assess satisfaction specific to the multidisciplinary care experience, focusing on the effectiveness of APP-driven navigation, coordination, and communication. 2.) Measure Emotional and Psychological Impact: Understand how the multidisciplinary approach affects emotional distress, anxiety, and empowerment during treatment. 3.) Examine Downstream Revenue: Assess the financial outcomes of the BMC, considering how coordinated care and efficient treatment contribute to sustained patient care and revenue. 4.) Evaluate Patient Retention: Determine whether multidisciplinary care influences patient willingness to continue treatment and recommend the clinic.
