Bladder control side-effects of deep brain stimulation for major depressive disorder related to recruitment of distinct subcomponents of the anterior limb of the internal capsule

Abstract: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has shown promise for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) [1,2]. However, stimulation can lead to off target side effects, necessitating parameter adjustments even if therapeutic benefits are present. This is particularly true for stimulation in locations where white matter tracts interconnecting different brain regions converge in a small region, such as the anterior limb of the internal capsule [3]. Here, we present the case of a patient who had been receiving therapeutically beneficial closed-loop DBS in the ventral capsule (VC) for MDD when stimulation started inducing bladder spasms.
