Reconfiguring security: India's act east policy and its impact on Manipur

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This study examines the impact of India’s Act East Policy on the border dynamics of Manipur, focusing on the period from 2010 to 2021. The primary argument is that while the Act East Policy has fostered economic opportunities and enhanced connectivity with Southeast Asia, it has also intensified security concerns in Manipur, leading to the securitization of the region. Using Securitization Theory and Regionalism as theoretical frameworks, the research explores how the policy's dual focus on economic development and security has shaped the socio-political landscape of Manipur. The study employs a qualitative approach, integrating government documents, policy papers, academic journals, and news sources to provide a comprehensive analysis. Key findings reveal that while infrastructure projects and economic collaboration have contributed to growth, the increased security measures and heightened military presence have created additional challenges for the local population. This research highlights the complex balance between fostering regional development and managing security concerns, offering insights into potential policy adjustments needed to ensure sustainable development and stability in the region.
