FIDWaC - Fast inverse distance weighting and compression
Year: 2025
Type: software-paper
Abstract: FIDWaC (Fast Inverse Distance Weighting and Compression) is a Python-based toolkit designed for efficient processing and storage of compressed geospatial data. It enables the creation of continuous surfaces from distributed survey points by applying Inverse Distance Weighting and k-Nearest Neighbors methods, and it performs lossy compression of raster data using techniques such as Discrete Cosine Transform, zigzag encoding, and run-length encoding. The toolkit supports a wide range of input formats, including TXT, CSV, LAS, LAZ, Ascii GRID, and GeoTIFF, and can export results to formats such as SHP, TXT, GeoTIFF, and 7z archives. It is optimized for multi-threaded processing and offers advanced capabilities like geoid correction and quality-controlled compression. FIDWaC is used in various fields, including bathymetry analysis, digital terrain modeling, shoreline monitoring, and hydrology, and it is fully optimized for multi-core processors while remaining compatible with both Windows and Linux environments.
