Abstract: Exposure to chlorinated water in swimming pools causes changes in the oral cavity, although the effects vary depending on the water quality, chlorine concentration, time spent in the pool, and oral hygiene. The most common changes are dental erosion, increased tartar formation, hypersensitivity, and appearance of stains on the teeth. The risks increase when the water has low pH or athletes consume erosive sports drinks. Younger swimmers are more susceptible to the onset of oral diseases. Because of the greater frequency and time spent in swimming pools, professional swimmers are at higher risk of developing dental erosion. With improper treatment of the swimming pools, tooth changes can happen very quickly. Regularly measuring and adjusting the pH of pool water can reduce the risk of oral damage. Hygiene, treating the tooth surface with fluoride or remineralizing products are effective in protecting teeth from complications. Dental examinations allow early detection and treatment of problems associated with frequent contact with pool water.
