Olanzapine-induced Hyperpigmentation

Study design: Case Report
Abstract: Olanzapine is an atypical antipsychotic used for the treatment of Schizophrenia. Its common adverse effects include weight gain, sedation, and metabolic disturbances, but dermatological side effects are relatively rare. This case report discusses the case of a patient with Schizophrenia who developed progressive hyperpigmentation following olanzapine use. As there was a temporal association, drug-induced hyperpigmentation was considered. Other potential causes of hyperpigmentation were ruled out, and the hyperpigmentation resolved 1 month after discontinuation of olanzapine. This case highlights the need for clinicians to be aware of the rare dermatological side effects of antipsychotics, ensuring timely recognition and management.
