“Vulnerable and easily influenced”: examining the vulnerabilities and susceptibilities associated with the engagement of young Australians in extremism

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Purpose This study aims to explore the engagement of young Australians in extremism to better understand vulnerabilities and susceptibilities. Design/methodology/approach To do this, the authors undertook case file analysis of young people engaged or formerly engaged with extremism in New South Wales and conducted interviews with countering violent extremism practitioners. Findings The findings reveal that many of the young people experienced multiple childhood traumas, had complex needs or experienced grooming. Practical implications These challenges provide evidence for all jurisdictions looking to understand and address the engagement of vulnerable young people with violent extremism. Originality/value The authors argue that disengagement responses for young people must account for their needs and vulnerability.
