Abstract: The article aims to highlight and promote the debate between two biases regarding the role of individual freedom in the constitution of modern and traditional societies, according to Eurocentric terms of the classical social sciences that refer to bourgeois and indigenous societies respectively. The concepts of freedom present in the works of the sociologist Georg Simmel and the philosopher-anthropologist Pierre Clastres, which reflect on what model of society allows greater freedom for its members. It is concluded that, although the ideal of individual freedom is the motto of bourgeois societies, in it individuals are more subordinated to social commands and political hierarchies than they would wish to be. In the opposite direction, indigenous societies are manifested as opposed to the production of inequalities. The dialogue between Simmel and Clastres explains the antagonism that both exert to positivist knowledge, which, in a way, characterizes them as outsiders thinkers in the social sciences.
