Meckel's diverticulum as vaginal replacement for redo surgery in anorectal malformations

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Anorectal malformations (ARM)being the common congenital anomalies occurring in 1 in 4000–5000 newborns. Associated recto urethral fistula being the most common in males and recto vestibular fistula being the common in females. Hence ARMs require staged surgical procedures. 50–60 % of ARMs have associated systemic anomalies including gastrointestinal tract. Association of ARM with Meckel's diverticulum has not been described in literature so far and its use as a replacement for vagina is altogether a rarity. What is known. • Anorectal malformations (ARM)being the common congenital anomalies, occurring in 1 in 4000 to 5000 newborns. Associated recto urethral fistula being the most common in males and recto vestibular fistula being the common in females. Hence ARM requires staged surgical procedures. • Popular rule of two applied to Meckel’s diverticulum ;2% of population,2:1 male: female ratio, presenting at around two years of age, 2feet (60cm) from ileocecal valve ,2cm diameter and 2inches (5cm) long, containing two types of heterotopic mucosa, gastric and pancreatic. Segmental or wedge resection of this anomaly and end to end anastomosis has been recommended. ∗ What is unknown . • Systematic preoperative evaluation with various imaging modalities and strategic planning of surgical procedure, meticulous dissection and delicate handling of anatomical tissues in ARM, is a prerequisite to avoid morbidities. • ∗An incidentally found Meckel’s diverticulum can be the option for vaginal replacement in case of absent vagina, if its anatomy is found feasible.
