Experimental and numerical investigation of the dynamic response of precast columns with grouted splice sleeve connectors subjected to dynamic loading

Abstract: Accelerated bridge construction (ABC) techniques, including the use Grouted Sleeve Splice (GSS) connectors, are popular for reducing construction time and have also proven effective in resisting hazard loading conditions such as seismic. However, there are still gaps in the research on the effects of the location of GSS connectors in precast columns under dynamic loading and on their residual bond strength after dynamic loading. This study tests two groups of precast specimens with GSS connectors at different locations under two rapid loading rates: one with the sleeve at the footing top (GSS-F) and one with the coupler at the column base (GSS-C). Results of the study show that GSS-F has a more ductile response and superior resistance under dynamic loading conditions. Post-rapid-loading pull-out tests reveal minimal tensile capacity reduction (4 %-5 %) in GSS-F couplers, while GSS-C couplers show significant reductions of 10 % and 98 %. The study also validates finite element models with bond-slip laws which then accurately predict first peak loading events (with errors between 0.7 % and 1.65 %). The FE model accurately predicts crack development and final failure modes of precast concrete structures. The validated model can also reveal non-visible damage within the coupler, which is not directly observable in experimental tests. Additionally, it effectively simulates the residual bond strength of the post-damaged GSS system, with an error of less than 20 %, providing valuable insights into its residual bond behavior.
