Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Introduction: During the breastfeeding process, women go through difficulties, such as lack of knowledge on how to breastfeed, incorrect technique, breast complications, and lack of support, which might lead to early weaning. The aim of the study was to check whether there are determinants related to breastfeeding time in women assisted at Primary Healthcare Unit - Pediatric Sector. Methods: The study sample consisted of women who had children born between January 1, 2017 and December 31, 2021 and who were accompanying their children to consultations, totaling a sample of 26 women. Data were collected in a questionnaire with closed-questions, performed by the researchers. Results: Through ordinal logistic regression, the following were observed to be significant determinants of breastfeeding duration: use of complement (P= 0.003), milk supply (P= 0.034), and previous experience (P= 0.022), with women with previous experience with motherhood had 35 times more chances of breastfeeding for a longer time compared who did not have experience (OR=35,64). Based on an Analysis of Multiple Correspondence (HOMALS), three profiles of variables were revealed, identifying that mothers who breastfeed for longer are those who do not offer supplementation, who have previous experience and who share their adequate milk production. Conclusion: Therefore, the results indicate only some of the factors involved in breastfeeding duration, and such factors (use of complement and supply milk) were corroborated by the findings of other studies.
