Diagnosis and treatment of an omental bursa abscess in a 4‐month‐old dog

Study design: Case Report
Abstract: A 4‐month‐old, 20.5 kg, entire, male Dobermann was presented to a primary care veterinary centre with acute‐onset weakness, pyrexia and abdominal pain. Referral was sought after a cranial abdominal mass and abdominal effusion were found while undergoing exploratory coeliotomy for a suspected enteric foreign body. Cytology of the mass and abdominal effusion revealed septic neutrophilic inflammation, and fluid culture isolated Staphylococcus pseudintermedius . Following referral, bloodwork documented significant leucocytosis, hypokalaemia and an increased C‐reactive protein. Abdominal imaging, including ultrasonography and computed tomography, identified a large, well‐marginated, encapsulated soft tissue attenuating mass, which was mixed in echogenicity, in the region of the omental vestibule. This mass was later excised without complications in a subsequent surgery at the referral hospital. An omental bursa abscess was diagnosed on histopathology. At the last follow‐up, 6 months after surgery, the patient remained free of clinical signs, with no signs of recurrence.
