Type: article
Abstract: Cinema in Pakistan has long served not only as a medium of artistic expression but also as a subtle platform for political commentary and social critique. Entertainment industry is one of the most effective sources to highlight the major issues in society. Cinema, as a cultural product often reflects the tensions, ideologies and struggles of the common man of the society. The present study was designed to examine the socio-political narratives highlighted in crime movies. A qualitative content analysis was used, and the Pakistani Maalik film was selected through purposive sampling as it fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Data was analyzed through thematic analysis. Five themes emerged: 1) Popular sovereignty, 2) Systematic Corruption and institutional failure, 3) Feudalism and political corruption, 4) Vigilantism and moral justice, and 5) Gender role stereotyping. The findings revealed that the real owners of this country are its citizens. The public appoints leaders, so they should be accountable to the citizens. Legal institutions are also politicized to favor the elite narratives. Citizens must recognize their power to oppose such corrupt leaders. This study recommends conducting comparative studies, mixed-method studies, and audience reception analysis of crime movies.
