Abstract: Prediabetes and intermediate hyperglycaemia are terms used to describe a stage in the disease course of type 2 diabetes between the stages of normal glucose tolerance and overt diabetes. There are two types of prediabetes—namely, impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and impaired fasting glucose (IFG)—and both can coexist. According to the International Diabetes Federation,1 by 2050, there will be an estimated 846·5 million individuals with IGT and 647·5 million with IFG. The number of individuals with prediabetes is clinically significant because most individuals transition through prediabetes before developing type 2 diabetes; therefore, this stage represents a window of opportunity for intervention.
