Abstract: Theory of computation (ToC), the subfield of theoretical computer science concerned with automata, formal languages, grammars, computability, and the foundations of complexity theory, among other topics, is a staple of undergraduate computer science programs. Nevertheless the teaching of ToC is severely understudied from the perspective of computing education research (CER).
