Phytopurifiers : a Natural Solution for Air Pollution

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Air pollution poses a considerable threat to human health and the environment. In response, there has been a growing interest in plant-based air purification systems, known as phytopurifiers. These systems utilize the natural competence of certain plants to absorb, metabolize, and segregate airborne pollutants. This review examine the current understanding of phytopurifiers, including their pathway, capability against common indoor pollutants, possibilities in urban environment. It also highlights recent research trends and future directions in the field of bio-filtration using plants.Phytopurification involves the absorption, segregation, and breakdown of harmful airborne substances such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), formaldehyde, benzene, and particular matter by certain plant species. These process carry out through stomatal uptake, leaf surface adsorption, and symbiotic interactions with root-associated microbes in the rhizosphere.Numerous plant species, including Spathiphyllum (Peace Lily), and Sansevieria trifasciata (Snake Plant), have proved notable efficacy in reducing indoor air pollutants.Exceeding pollutant removal, these plants also provide to increased humidity, improved aesthetics, and enhanced psychological well-being.Phytopurifiers are now being embodied into indoor spaces, green walls, and hybrid air purification systems, nurturing healthier living and working environments. However, purification rate changes based on environmental conditions must be managed for wider application.
