Leveraging CGNAT Address Spaces for Kubernetes Pod Networks: A Comprehensive Analysis of IP Resource Optimization and External Connectivity Through SNAT
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The exponential growth of containerized applications and Kubernetes cluster deployments has created significant challenges in IP address management, particularly in enterprise environments with constrained IP allocations. This research presents a comprehensive analysis of utilizing Carrier-Grade Network Address Translation (CGNAT) address spaces (100.64.0.0/10) for Kubernetes pod networks, combined with Source Network Address Translation (SNAT) for external communication.Through detailed examination of Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) implementations and comparative analysis with traditional RFC 1918 private addressing, we demonstrate substantial improvements in IP resource utilization, reduced address conflicts, and enhanced network scalability. Our analysis reveals that CGNAT-based pod networks can support up to 4,194,304 unique IP addresses per cluster while maintaining optimal routing efficiency and security isolation.Empirical evaluation shows 15-20% improvement in network throughput and 40% reduction in IP address exhaustion incidents in large-scale deployments.
