Year: 2025
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: . Film serves as a representation of social reality within a specific time and place through the signs embedded within it. Amid the growing dominance of Gen-Z in Indonesia, various films now seek to portray the dynamics of their lives, including their approach to building and maintaining family relationships. The film Dua Hati Biru, directed by Gina S. Noer and Dinna Jasanti, emerges as a response to the issue of early marriage and domestic dynamics from the perspective of Gen-Z. This study aims to analyze the representation of Gen-Z families in Dua Hati Biru using a qualitative approach, grounded in John Fiske’s Semiotic Analysis Theory, which encompasses three levels: reality, representation, and ideology. The results indicate that the film successfully captures the characteristics of Gen-Z families at the level of reality, marked by expressive styles of appearance and behavioral tendencies shaped by the use of modern technology—elements that have transformed Gen-Z’s lifestyle as a whole. At the level of representation, Gen-Z is depicted through the selection of songs themed around the coming-of-age process, as well as the specific inclusion of Gen-Z musicians. In addition, the film incorporates visual effects that emulate templates from social media platforms such as TikTok, which is strongly associated with Gen-Z’s digital life. At the ideological level, the film explores various conflicts rooted in patriarchal values that are deeply ingrained in Indonesian culture, employing the female gaze as a narrative approach to present these issues from a distinctly female perspective.
