A Comparative Volumetric Evaluation of Three Different Obturation Techniques in Primary Teeth: An In Vitro Study

Abstract: Conventional radiographs or digital imaging are the two most commonly used methods to confirm filling quality. The disadvantage of using these two is that they do not provide a three-dimensional assessment of the obturation.4 Other methods which could be used to check for the quality of obturation within a root canal are radioisotope, dye penetration, bacterial leakage, microscopic analysis, clearing techniques, etc., but these techniques have their own drawbacks, making it difficult to accurately assess the quality of obturation.5 Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) has been successfully used in many areas of medical field. It gives three-dimensional volume measurements with a slice thickness much thinner than the normal computed tomography (CT) methods.5 IntroductIonPrimary teeth are the best space maintainers available, and thus it becomes important to preserve and retain it as long as possible, as it plays a vital position for mastication, phonetics, esthetics, and additionally as a space maintainer for permanent teeth and this goal can be achieved by vital and nonvital pulp therapy procedures.Ultimately, pulpectomy aims to create a three-dimensional seal which will hinder microleakage between the root canal and periapical tissues, thereby depriving any surviving microorganism of the nutrients and prevents toxic bacterial byproducts from entering the periapical tissues. 1 In order to ensure the success of endodontic treatment, the technique used for obturation is as important as the properties of obturating material being used.An ideal obturation technique should ensure complete filling of root canal with minimum number of voids. 2 Wide range of obturation techniques available include endodontic pluggers, tuberculin syringe, NaviTips, disposable injections, Lentulo spiral, Jiffy tubes, endodontic pressure syringe, bidirectional spiral, Pastinject, etc. 3 Pastinject, introduced by Micromega in 2002, has widely gained popularity in the recent years. It works similarly to a Lentulo spiral and could be handheld or motor driven.Pastinject has flattened blades which are twisted into shape, making it more flexible, allowing it to perfectly follow the root canal, and the helical shape creates a translational movement which guarantees perfect application into the root canal walls. 1 Introduced in 2004, NaviTips (Ultradent) have a thin, flexible metal cannula, which allows it to pass through tortuous canals and reach the apex.Paste can be injected rapidly and uniformly, thus providing a more dense filling with less voids. 1
