Imaging 3D Printed Fracture Networks under Stress using X-Ray Computed Tomography

Year: 2025
Type: preprint
Abstract: In this note, we present an experimental investigation of 3D-printed fracture networks designed to reproduce the deformational behavior of both single fractures and interconnected fracture networks embedded in elastic solids under varying stress conditions. Using controlled loading experiments and high-resolution X-ray imaging, we quantify the spatial distribution and evolution of fracture aperture during elastic deformation. We validate our methodology by comparing experimentally measured, stress-dependent apertures of single fractures with analytical calculations and numerical simulations. Our results show excellent agreement across the three approaches, confirming the capability of 3D-printed models to accurately capture elastic deformational behavior of fractures. Furthermore, by combining our experimental approach with advanced numerical modeling, we reveal the complex interplay between stress and structure in 3D interconnected fracture networks. This work demonstrates 3D-printed models provide a robust framework for investigating mechanical deformation and interaction in fractured media with important implications for fluid flow.
