The Influence of Combustion Technology on Products in the Pottery Crafts Centers of Java, Bali, and West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Pottery is a handcrafted commodity produced by rural populations in different parts of Indonesia. Pottery-making, one of the world's oldest crafts in Indonesia, has seen many changes throughout the years, particularly concerning technology. Although ceramics have been less common in culture throughout time, they are still necessary for a variety of essential purposes. As a result, several Indonesian pottery-making facilities have endured and are still active today. While customer interest in pottery is generally unaffected by its quality, particularly when it comes to ornamental pottery, it is vital to remember that export-quality pottery requires compliance with certain criteria. One of the most crucial factors in establishing the quality of pottery is the method used in its firing. To obtain pottery that is appropriate for its intended application, it is therefore vital to understand the various fire procedures and technologies employed. This study employs the Function Complex theory method for analysis. In particular, this study highlights how technology and firing methods affect ceramic products and the kinds of ovens used in the pottery craft sector in Java, Bali, and West Nusa Tenggara. The study's findings indicate that pottery quality increases with greater fire temperatures and longer firing times, and vice versa. When it comes to stove use, combustion technology is also determined by international market share.
