The anesthetic management of a patient with stiff person syndrome undergoing ambulatory endoscopic sinus surgery: A case report

Study design: Case Report
Abstract: Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS) is a rare autoimmune neurological disorder with a prevalence of one to two cases per one hundred thousand to one million people. It is caused by autoantibodies that target gamma amino butyric acid (GABA) associated proteins resulting in progressive muscle spasms and rigidity. As a result, these patients also have a greater sensitivity to neuromuscular blocking agents, which increases their risks when undergoing surgical and anesthetic management. We report the anesthetic management of a 46-year-old female with SPS who successfully underwent general anesthesia for an outpatient nasal endoscopy with bilateral maxillary antrostomy and total ethmoidectomy.
