Simultaneously manipulating first and second electronic excited states in organic molecules by strong light–matter coupling

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Strong light–matter coupling creates hybrid quasiparticles that integrate the properties of two particles, providing a nonsynthetic and promising strategy to suppress intrinsic exciton losses in the first and second electronic excited states of organic molecules. However, current studies on strong coupling focus on the first excited state of molecules and lack a cooperative manipulation of multiple electronic excited states. Here, we demonstrate the strong coupling of photons with first and second electronic excited states of molecules using a single planar microcavity sandwiched with tetraphenyldibenzoperiflanthene (DBP) films. By simulating the coupling strength under different exciton densities, the ultrastrong coupling of photons and first excited states is satisfied at a DBP mass fraction of 50%, while forming the high-lying polariton. Moreover, the strong coupling of photons and multiple electronic excited states significantly reduces the energy gap, which helps to achieve the hybridization of electronic excited states in suitable organic material systems. Our work provides a new strategy for manipulating electronic excited states of organic molecules and minimizing intrinsic losses in organic electronics.
