A Comparative Study of Quick Sequential Organ Failure Assessment Score and National Early Warning Score 2 as Prognostic Tools in Patients with Community-acquired Pneumonia

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Predictive scoring systems like confusion, urea, respiratory rate, blood pressure and age ≥65 years (CURB-65), pneumonia severity index (PSI), sepsis-related organ failure assessment (SOFA), quick sepsis-related organ failure assessment (qSOFA), and National IntroductIonSepsis remains a leading cause of hospital mortality, affecting approximately 48.9 million people worldwide and resulting in 11 million deaths, predominantly in low-and middle-income countries (LMIC). 1 In India, 2017 had 11.3 million sepsis cases and 2.9 million deaths, with a concerning intensive care unit (ICU) mortality rate of 25%, ranking the country among the highest in Southeast Asia.2,3 Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) significantly contributes to sepsis, with lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) causing approximately 2.4 million deaths annually.Although agestandardized death rates declined from 2005 to 2015, LRTI mortality remains stable, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. 4 The case fatality rate for CAP ranges from 2 to 20%, increasing to 50% in ICU patients, with considerable variability across healthcare settings, regions, and demographics.5 Notably, India reports about 23% of worldwide pneumonia cases and 36% of World Health Organization (WHO)'s regional cases, though national statistics may mask major subnational differences.
