Abstract: One of the few questions that India, after 78 years of independence still grappling with is the role of religion in politics and what kind of relation politics and religion should have?To find out this answer, this paper will delve into the latter decades of Nineteen century early decades of the 20 th century, for these two time periods were very tumultuous in terms of shaping the future of Indian nationalism.The Hindu Sangthan movement, that was begins to reform the Hindu religion, gradually takes a rigid form.This paper also sheds some light on this journey.
