Unlocking the sustainability potential of Liberica coffee (Coffea liberica) in Riau’s tropical peatlands: Strategic insights from Rangsang Island, Indonesia
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The study evaluates the sustainability of Liberica coffee (Coffea liberica) plantations in Rangsang Island's tropical peatlands, focusing on ecological, economic, social, technological, and institutional dimensions using Multidimensional Scaling Rapid Appraisal for Sustainability (MDS RAPS). Through data collection from 82 farmers and stakeholders, and comprehensive analysis of sustainability indices, the results reveal an overall "less sustainable" status with a multidimensional index of 39.42. Social dimensions scored highest (60.68), reflecting moderate sustainability driven by farmer experience and motivation, while technological (24.29) and institutional (32.19) dimensions scored poorly due to inadequate infrastructure and governance. Key challenges include peat soil acidity, limited market access, and insufficient institutional support, emphasizing the need for integrated water management, agroforestry practices, farmer training, and technological investment. These findings offer strategic insights for balancing environmental conservation with economic development in peatland agriculture, contributing to sustainability frameworks applicable to similar ecosystems.
