Reimagining Eco-Friendly Housing with Traditional Architectural Elements in Oman

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: As Oman aims to strike a balance between sustainability and fast urbanization, eco-friendly housing must be integrated in a way that reflects the country's social norms, family dynamics and cultural identity in addition to environmental concerns. This study investigates the ways in which contemporary eco-friendly home design can benefit from traditional Omani architectural elements. Using vernacular architectural elements like courtyards, wind towers, thick adobe walls and mashrabiya, the study demonstrates how indigenous knowledge systems provide important insights for thermal comfort, energy efficiency and cultural appropriateness. By combining these tried-and-true architectural concepts with state-of-the-art sustainable technology, the study proposes a hybrid paradigm that respects Omani tradition while addressing contemporary ecological challenges. The contribution of traditional Omani architectural elements to passive cooling and energy efficiency in Omani modern building designs is highlighted. The findings are intended to help architects and developers create housing designs that are both socially and environmentally acceptable, opening the door to an environmentally conscious future that is deeply ingrained in Omani culture.
