Abstract: This study offers a comparative analysis of India's two leading stock market indices-the Nifty 50 and the S&P BSE Sensex-over the period from 2019 to 2024.Both indices are vital indicators of the Indian equity market, reflecting the performance of large-cap companies and providing a window into the broader economy and sectoral trends.This research examines the structure, returns, and market behaviour of these indices amid key economic and geopolitical events, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, changes in fiscal and monetary policies, inflationary trends, and shifts in global financial conditions.By analysing sectoral composition, return patterns, volatility measures including the India VIX, and resilience of the indices, the study highlights their performance differences and risk profiles.The findings aim to help investors, analysts, and portfolio managers make betterinformed decisions regarding index-based investment strategies within India's dynamic financial markets.
