Multiscale structural evolutions of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene porous membrane

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) porous membrane is suitable for a wide range of applications due to its good mechanical properties, acid and alkali corrosion resistance, as well as adjustable porous structure. The properties of UHMWPE porous membrane are largely dependent on the porous structure consisting of crystalline and amorphous solid, which can be regulated by molecular chains disentanglement and strain-induced crystallization. In-depth understanding of the mechanisms of multiscale structural evolution, which includes molecular chain entanglement, crystalline morphology, and porous structure during the preparation of UHMWPE porous membrane is the key to achieving excellent properties. In this review, the effects of molecular chain entanglement and crystalline morphology on the porous structure of UHMWPE membrane are analyzed starting from the preparation method. Further, the influence of the porous structure on the performance is analyzed from the point of view of application requirements. Finally, the modification methods and application prospects of UHMWPE porous membrane are presented. By summarizing the research progress in recent years, this review is hoped to open up more avenues for the development of UHMWPE porous membrane for a wider and interdisciplinary range of applications.
