Abstract: In the context of Vietnam’s higher education undergoing significant transformation towards modernization and international integration, the renewal of teaching methods has become an urgent requirement to enhance training quality and foster students’ holistic competencies. This paper analyzes the theoretical foundations of university teaching methods through contemporary approaches such as constructivism, experiential learning, studentcentered learning, and competency-based education. Based on this foundation, the study examines the current situation of teaching methods in Vietnamese universities, highlighting strengths, limitations, and underlying causes. It then discusses global trends in innovative teaching, including active learning, projectbased learning, problem-based learning, blended learning, and personalized learning, while suggesting their contextual adaptation in Vietnam. From this, the article proposes specific orientations and solutions to reform teaching methods in higher education, including developing pedagogical and technological skills for lecturers, cultivating self-directed learning and research culture among students, investing in digital learning environments for institutions, and improving policy mechanisms to support innovation from educational management. The discussion emphasizes the shift in lecturers’ role from mere “knowledge transmitters” to “learning designers, facilitators, and companions,” while addressing challenges and opportunities in applying digital technologies. In conclusion, the paper affirms that renewing teaching methods is not only essential but also the key to improving the quality, effectiveness, and international competitiveness of Vietnam’s higher education in the era of globalization.
